World Cup 2007 – India makes new World Cup Record

India has now opened its account by winning against the Bermuda by a huge margin. Batting first India made a record 413 runs. Then they bowled out Bermuda for just 156 runs and defeated them with a huge margin of 257 runs.

With Sehwag, Ganguly, Yuvraj and Sachin in full flow, India made the highest score in World Cup and ruled Bermuda out of the match. Even our bowlers bowled well and were able to bowled out the opposition very quickly. Agarkar and Kumble took 3 wickets each. Sehwag after scoring his hundred after a long long time, proved comeback of his lost form and was declared Man of the Match.

Sad Demise of Bob Woolmer

Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer died on Sunday after being found unconscious in his hotel room. The Pakistan team is shocked with the demise of Bob Woolmer. Woolmer was found lying on the floor after which he was taken to a nearby hospital when the doctors declared him dead.
It is believed that Woolmer had seen his team crash out of the World Cup on Saturday by the debutant Ireland. After hearing the news Woolmers wife has now left for Jamaica

World Cup 2007 – Pakistan out of the World Cup, India on its way…

The lost against the Irelands and West Indies has now put Pakistan on its way back to home. And India is no different. India also in its opening match against the Bangladesh seemed over confident and has managed to register a ‘lost’ against them. The lost against the Bangladesh clearly showed Dravid’s poor captaincy and batting form. Winning the toss and electing to bat first on a seaming wicket seemed to be an over confident decision. Strong batting on paper does not mean strong batting abilities. Each player in Indian team is a great player in itself. But when we think of team India, it seems like a team of individuals and not team India. It is only the media who always make hype in such tournaments to earn their interest. If India does not learn very quickly (enough learning)… does not act quickly and apply themselves, then like the Pakistanis, it also will be heading back to its country long before the World Cup ends.

World Cup 2007 – Pakistan vs Ireland

March 17, 2007

Ireland won the toss and elected to field first. Pakistan struggled to faced the Ireland bowling attack and were able to reach a target of 132 only in 45.4 overs. They were bowled out by the Irish bowlers. Imran Nazir scored the highest – 24 runs.

Ireland on the other hand comfortably scored 133 runs in 41.4 overs losing 7 wickets. N. Obrien scored the highest runs, 72 hitting 6 fours and 1 six. This win over Pakistan has put Pakistan out of the World Cup tournament.

World Cup 2007 – India vs Bangladesh

It now seems that India as habit of making easy games seem difficult and more exciting. This may be good for the opponent team but not for Indians. Today also, India has created a new twist in Group B by losing to Bangladesh. It has now created an excitement in this group. It seems like India were confident of winning the match and thought that Bangladesh were underdogs.

After winning the toss, India elected to bat which seems to me the worst decision made. Indians seems to be continuing their experiment against the opponents by electing to bat first. Under the given conditions, the Indian team collapsed for a mere total of 191. Thanks to Ganguly and Yuvraj for giving India some respectable total.
But their bowling also seems to be not at par. Bangladesh register a comfortable win over India in just 48.3 overs. Three of their batsman scored half centuries and did not seem to be in trouble when facing the Indian attack. Bangladesh won the match by 5 wickets.

World Cup 2007 – England vs New Zealand

March 16, 2007

New Zealand won the toss and elected to field. England managed to score 209 in 50 overs. Pietersen scored 60 hitting 4 fours and 1 six.

World Cup 2007 – South Africa vs Netherlands

March 16, 2007

In this shortened match due to rains, South Africa scored 353 in just 40 overs. Herschelle Gibbs created a world record by hitting 6 sixes in a over. This is also a one day international record. Also Mark Boucher and Jacques Kallis made a world record of scoring the fastest 50 and 100 respectively in the World Cup. Kallis scored 128 in just 109 balls hitting 11 fours and 5 sixes.

Netherlands only scored 132 runs in the 40 overs. South Africa won the match with a huge margin.

World Cup 2007 – Zimbabwe vs Ireland

March 15, 2007

This was the most thrilling match as of yet in this World Cup. The first tie-up match in this World Cup. Zimbabwe won the toss and decided to field. Ireland batted first and scored 221 in their 50 overs. J. P. Bray scored the highest in the side. He scored 115 in 139 balls with 10 fours and 2 sixes.

Zimbabwe in their run chase struggled to win the match. Towards the end Zimbabwe batsman lost their wickets are were all out for 221 runs and the match ended in a tie.

World Cup 2007 – SriLanka vs Bermuda

March 15, 2007

In an another one sided match, SriLanka beat Bermuda with a huge margin of 243 runs. SriLanka won the toss and elected to bat. With decent opening stand from Tharanga and Jayasuriya, the strong middle order played their part and gave support to the SriLankan batting to score a huge total of 321 runs. Jayawardene scored 85 of 90 balls and Sangakkara scored 76 of 83 balls. Silva gave momentum to the SriLankan innings by scoring 55 of just 45 balls.

Bermuda were all out for 78 in 24.4 overs. SriLankans thus demonstrated their competence in the World Cup.

Pakistan struggled to chase the West Indian total from the start. Their first wicket fell at a mere score of 6 runs. Shoaib Malik tried to stabilize the Pakistan innings. He made 62 of 54 balls hitting 6 fours and 1 six. Pakistan were bowled out for 187 in 47.2 overs.

Three nations – South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe hosted the 8th World Cup. Fourteen teams participated in this World Cup. They were divided into two groups. Group A – Australia, India, Zimbabwe, England, Pakistan, Netherlands, Namibia. Group B - Sri Lanka, Kenya, New Zealand, South Africa, West Indies, Canada, Bangladesh. The best three teams for each of the groups qualified for the Super Sixes. Among these the top four teams qualified for the semifinals.

In Group A, Australia, India and Zimbabwe while in Group B SriLanka, Kenya and New Zealand Entered the semifinals. Kenya seemed to be in very good form in this World Cup. With India, Australia and SriLanka, Kenya also entered the semifinals.

The first semifinal was played between Australia and SriLanka. Australia made 212 against SriLanka. This target was then revised to 171 (according to Duckworth-Lewis method). SriLanka was well short of this target at the end of the match. They were able to score only 123.

In the second semifinals, India easily defeated the Kenyans. India had scored 270 while Kenya was bowled out for 179 runs only.

In the finals, Australia scored heavily against India. They scored 359 with only 2 wickets down. Ricky Ponting was in full flow hammering the Indian bowling attack to all parts of the ground. World Cup - 1996

The fifth World Cup was hosted jointly by India, Pakistan and SriLanka in 1996 and was called the Wills World Cup.

Three teams made their World Cup debuts in 1996: the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands and Kenya. So total of 12 teams – SriLanka, India, Pakistan, Australia, England, New Zealand, West Indies, South Africa, Zimbabwe, United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands and Kenya – were divided into two groups.

At the start of the tournament, Australia and West Indies refused to go to SriLanka, because of the LTTE bombings which had taken place. So SriLanka were declared winners without competing against these two teams.

The first semifinal was between India and SriLanka at the Eden Gardens. SriLanka batted first and made 251 for 8 wickets. After a good opening, Indian wickets started collapsing and were 120 for 8 in the 35th over when sections of crowd began to throw fruit and plastic bottles onto the field. The players left the field for some time but when they again returned for play, more bottles were thrown onto the field and fires were lit in the stand. Match referee Clive Lloyd awarded the match to Sri Lanka, the first default ever in a Test or One-day international.

In the second semi-final at Mohali, Australia were 15 for 4. But after good batting performance they reach 207 for 8 from their 50 overs. The West Indians too had a very good start and were 165 for 2 in the 42nd over. But after that they kept losing wickets and were all down in for about 202 runs.

In the finals, SriLanka won the toss and asked Australia to bat despite the team batting first having won all five previous World Cup finals. Australia made 241 after losing 7 wickets in their 50 overs. Sri Lanka won the match in the 47th over with Aravinda de Silva following his 3 for 42 with an unbeaten 107. He also won the Player of the Match award. It was the first time a tournament host or co-host had won the cricket World Cup.

Fifth World Cup went top the SriLankans.

World Cup - 1992

The fifth World Cup was hosted jointly by Australia and New Zealand and was called the Benson and Hedges World Cup. South Africa after a long ban entered the World Cup this time. Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, SriLanka, West Indies, Zimbabwe and South Africa competed for this World Cup.

This World Cup was very different from the past World Cups. It was the first World Cup which had day/night matches, white cricket balls and coloured team uniforms. It also had a controversial system of recalculating team totals for a reduced number of overs for matches affected by rain. Pinch hitters were used by teams to score fast in the initial 15 overs to take full advantage of the field restrictions. Also New Zealand introduced spin in the opening overs to confuse the opposition.

Unlike the other World Cups, the format also changed because of the inclusion of a ninth team. So the team were not divided into groups. But each team had to play against all the other teams participating in the World Cup. It was called Round Robin. In all 36 matches were required to complete the first stage of the World Cup. The top four teams qualified for the semifinals.

In one of the semifinals, South Africa lost to England in a controversial circumstances, when after a rain delay, due to calculations, they had to score 21 runs from 1 ball. In the other semifinals Pakistan beat New Zealand by chasing 262 runs to enter the finals of this World Cup. Surprisingly, Pakistan had won only one match and had qualified for the semifinals.

Pakistan played England in the Finals, in which they scored 249 in 50 overs. England were bowled out for 227 in 49.2 overs. This was possible because of the magnificent bowling performance from Wasim Akram, who took three crucial wickets towards the end of the England innings.

Fifth World Cup was then lifted by Pakistan under the captaincy of Imran Khan.

World Cup - 1987

India and Pakistan hosted the fourth World Cup in 1987 and was called the Reliance World Cup. Again eight teams participated – Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, SriLanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe. The format was the same as the 1983 World Cup except for the number of overs which were now reduced to 50.

In group A, India and Australia and in Group B Pakistan and England entered the semifinals. Both the host teams topped the scoring charts in their respective group. Both India and Pakistan failed to enter the finals and could not bring about an eagerly waited India-Pakistan finals.

In the finals against England, Australia won by 7 runs. Australia under the captaincy of Allan Border lifted the World Cup. David Boon was declared the man of the match.

Australia lifted the fourth World Cup – Reliance World Cup.

World Cup - 1983

In 1983 again England hosted the World Cup and was again called the Prudential World Cup. This time also eight teams participated – Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, SriLanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe (new team).

Here again, the teams were divided into two groups of 4 teams each. In the preliminary matches, unlike the previous World Cups, each team in a group played twice with the other teams in the same group.

This World Cup was full of surprises, with the then underdogs, India and Zimbabwe beating West Indies and Australia respectively in their preliminary matches. So from group A England and Pakistan while in group B West Indies and India qualified for the semifinals.

In semifinals against England, Mohinder Amarnath, with his allround performance helped the Indian team in defeating England at their home ground. He was awarded the man of the match of his allround performance in this semifinal.

In the other semifinals between West Indies and Pakistan, West Indies defeated Pakistan and entered the finals.

So India again had to face the mighty West Indies, who had a strong fast bowling attack. India were bowled out for a mere score of 183 in just 54.4 overs. Srikant was the highest run getter in the Indian side with 38 runs. Amarnath stayed for long and tried to give stability to the team.

After such a poor batting performance, the hopes of the Indian team were almost non-existent. Viv Richards was then playing at his best hammering the Indian pace attack to all parts of the ground. But then a miss hit by Richards went high up in the air and Kapil Dev (Captain) ran a distance almost upto the boundary to take a stunning catch. Then on, the Indian bowlers consistently took wickets and led India to a victory. India beat West Indies by 43 runs. Amarnath again was declared the man of the match of his economical bowling and 3 wickets.

India beat the mighty West Indies to bring home the third World Cup – Prudential Cup

World Cup - 1979

The second World Cup was in England in the year 1979. It was sponsored by Prudential Insurance Company and hence was called the Prudential World Cup. This year also, eight teams participated – Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, SriLanka, West Indies and Canada which replaced East Africa.

In this World Cup, the teams were divided into two groups. The two best teams among the group qualified for the semifinals. In group A England and Pakistan qualified for the semifinals while in group B, West Indies and New Zealand were in semifinals. India was as the last position in group B.

The finals was played between England and West Indies. West Indies batted first and score 286 for 9 in 60 overs. They defeated England by 92 runs.

So the second World Cup was also lifted by West Indies.

World Cup - 1975

The first ICC World Cup was organised by England in 1975. Eight countries participated in this World Cup – Australia, East Africa, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies. Out of these eight countries England, Australia, New Zealand and West Indies were in the semifinals.

In the first semi-final, which was held on June 18, 1975, Australia batted second and won by 4 wickets. England batted first and were all out for 93 in just 36.2 overs. Australia made 94 and won by 4 wickets and in 28.4 overs only.

In the second semi-final at the Oval, also on June 18, 1975, West Indies beat New Zealand. New Zealand made 158 in 52.2 overs while West Indies met the target in just 40.1 overs with 5 wickets in hand.

So now the final was between Australia and West Indies at Lord's on June 21, 1975. West Indies batted first and made a huge total of 291 in 60 overs. Australia made 274 and were all out.

West Indies were the World Cup Champions in the 1975 ICC tournament.

Brian Lara Unhappy!

On the one side the Indian Captain is feeling happy about his teams performance in the warm up match, Lara the West Indian captain is not very happy. The loose shots played by their batsman is making Lara worried. If West Indies have to win the World Cup then it is their batsman who have to perform consistently. Their sad form against the Indian team has made Lara very unhappy.

Dravid Happy!

The win against the West Indies in the last warmup match has made the Indian Captain Rahul Dravid Happy. This is because, Indian team players have regain their lost form.

Bowling out the West Indies for a mere total of 85 has proved that our bowlers are working hard and are in great form. This shows very positive sign of the Indian team working towards their goal of bringing the World Cup to India.

Sanath Jaysuria World Cup Stats

Sanath Jaysuria, former SriLankan Captain, was in great form in the 1996 World Cup. Was he not good at scoring runs? Yeah and that too in quick time. His attacking nature is a strong feature of his batting. He contributed a lot in Sri Lanka's victory in the 1996 Cricket World Cup. He was announced Man of the Tournament for his all-round contributions.

Sanath has played a total of 379 ODI with more than 11000 runs under his belt. His batting average is around 30 and has a top score of 189. He also has 285 wickets in his bag. His best bowling figure is 6/29 and has took 111 catches. This performance makes him a great all rounder.

Sourav Ganguly World Cup Stats

Sourav Ganguly, former Captain of Indian team has led India to the World Cup 2003 finals, and is now holding the Indian captaincy record for the most Test victories.

In the 1999 Cricket World Cup, Sourav Ganguly scored 183 against Sri Lanka. This is the highest by an Indian in a World Cup Cricket tournament. He was appointed Captain of the Indian team immediately after the World Cup. In the immediate next series in the 2000 Champions Trophy he scored 2 centuries.

Also during his captaincy for the 2003 World Cup final against Australia, Ganguly after winning the toss decided to field. The decision of fielding first had raised questions in the minds of the people. But Sourav was confident and backed his call of fielding first. According to Sourav there would have been moisture on the pitch that would have helped his bowlers. But his bowlers bowled very badly and also the captain batted very poorly. India lost the match my a big margin of 125 runs.

Ricky Ponting World Cup Stats

Australia’s leading one day international run-scorer and also a century maker, Ricky Ponting have now surpassed records previously held by Mark Waugh. In the 1996 Cricket World Cup, Ricky Point scored a century against the West Indies in Jaipur, which made him the youngest ever World Cup centurion.

Also in a match against India in the 2003 Cricket World Cup final Ricky Ponting scored 140 and was unbeaten. This was the highest by a captain in a World Cup final. This was the final, in which India were heavily defeated by a big margin of 125 runs. This is a record defeat margin (for World Cup Final matches) in which Ponting's brilliant 140 from 121 balls was a great feature.

Sachin Tendulkar World Cup Stats

Sachin has scored the most runs in World Cup Cricket History. He scored 1,732 runs at an average of 59.72.

In 2003 Cricket World Cup, Sachin Tendulkar was the only highest scorer who scored a highest by any player in a single Cricket World Cup. He scored 673 runs in his 11 Innings. Scored a hundred and scored 6 fifties. He bowled 18 overs and gave 77 runs and took two wickets. He also took catches in the tournament. He was awarded the player of the World Cup Tournament in the 2003 Cricket World Cup.

Ganguly - Chappel Relationships Improve

The difference of opinion between Ganguly and coach Greg Chappel is now a history. Sourav Ganguly has also forgotten about it. “I have good relationships with Greg Chappel” are the words when Ganguly spoke to some of the reporters.

Staying out of the Indian team for a whole year has made Ganguly change his attitude towards his way of playing cricket. He is now scoring runs and has gain confidence. Even team Indian wants him to play at his best and score runs and make India victorious.

Ganguly does not think that keeping away from cricket has helped him score runs. According to him he was out of form and now the form has returned. And so has he.

Sehwag and West Indies - A fiasco

In their final warm up match against the West Indies, India alongwith Ajit Agarkar, Munaf Patel and Irfan Pathan bowled out the opposing team for a mere total of 85 runs. But Sehwag was a big diappointment. Powel showed Sehwag the way to the pavilion without giving him a chance to open his run account.

The Indian bowling was great. At the start itself, Agarkar took the wicket of Cris Gayle and then Zaheer Khan took the wicket of Chanderpaul. Both were caught behind by Dhoni. After that Munaf Patel and Irfan Pathan were the two who continued taking wickets one after the other. Lara scored 22 which was the highest score for West Indies.

Munaf Patel bowled a very good spell by giving only 10 runs and taking 4 wickets while Pathan supported him by taking 3 wickets and giving only 25 runs.

Now it was to see how soon India reaches the small total of 85 runs posted by West Indies. Sehwag was a big disappointment but then the two Indian youngsters Dinesh Kartik and Robin Utappa sailed India to a victory in about 20 overs or so.

India-West Indies Warmup Match

Today India will be playing a warmup match with West Indies. This is their second warmup match after defeating Netherlands.

In other warmup matches Australia will be playing with England, Pakistan with South Africa and NewZealand with SriLanka. But the India-West Indies match is going to be the most interesting one. Because the hosting country will be playing it. The team has to create a strategy to play on medium pace wickets in West Indies. Such wickets are a test for both, batsman and bowlers.

In the first warmup match, Indian batsman played very well and we expect them to play the same in this second warmup match. India has lots of hope on Sehwag and hence he has to prove himself. Also Robin Utthapa and Dinesh Karthik have to prove their batting. The good thing for India is that Yuvraj is bowling very well these days and he is a good bowler to be used in the middle overs.

West Indies also expects Sarvan to play very well. Against Kenya Sarvan did not get a chance to show his talent. All other matches would also be interesting. Australia will get a chance to defeat England and take revenge of their loss. NewZealand will also try to Match the SriLankan team after their defeat against Bangladesh in their opening warmup match.

World Cup in India

Still one week left for the challenge for India winning this World Cup. But the ICC World Cup has reached India. The fan in K0lkatta gathered to see this trophy but the gold ring at the bottom had some defects and so there was chaos at the Metro tower.

LG Electronics, Global partner of the ICC World Cup had organise this prestigious event. Whether this is a replica of the original World Cup or not, the organisers confirmed that the trophy had been bought to Kolkatta from Delhi and will be going to Mumbai before it reaches West Indies.

Mission World Cup – 2007

With the good wishes and blessings of millions of people, the Indian Team has departed for the World Cup 2007 with strong determination of winning it again after the win in 1983.

24 years back, India created history by defeating the mighty West Indies in the World Cup final under the captaincy of all rounder – Kapil Dev. Will Rahul Dravid be able to fulfill the hopes of crores of people in India of winning this World Cup.

In 1983 at the finals in Lords, India defeated West Indies and proved to the world that it was then an invincible and mighty team. It was all a magical moment. There were very little hopes of India winning the World Cup then. This same pressure of winning the World Cup again in 2007 is on Rahul Dravid. All the teams participating are strong contenders and all hope of winning this World Cup.

In the previous World Cup, under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly, India had to fight hard to defeat Holland in their opening match. At that time stones were thrown at Kaif’s home. In their next matches, India played well and were able to reach the finals. But were defeated by Ricky Ponting’s strong team members. Sachin scored 673 runs in the tournament and was declared the player of the tournament.

This time under the supervision of coach Guru Greg Chappel and captain Rahul Dravid, India has been able to find players with talent and spirit of winning the World Cup. So again the hopes in the minds of Indian people have rose. India will be playing its opening match with Bangladesh at Port of Spain.

Cheers.

Calypso Cricket

ICC Chief Executive, Malcolm Speed, says the cricketing world will descend on the Caribbean fully expecting to savour the unique cricket atmosphere for which the region has become renowned.
Published on: http://www.cricketworld.com/world_cup_2007/article/?aid=9524

What is calypso?
A musical style of West Indian origin, influenced by jazz, usually having topical, often improvised, lyrics.

Then why calypso cricket?
It is this same festive season which gives us the reason for calling the world cup cricket as ‘Calypso Cricket’. Infact this is the reason why West Indies Cricket Board has a reason to host the World Cup.

Cricket in this part of the world is played with great passion and at the same time enjoyed to its highest level with live music, drums, food, etc. Many of the people who will be visiting West Indies for watching World Cup will also be visiting many other places where they will get to enjoy the festive part of West Indies. Caribbean, St. Marten and the Leeward Islands, Ouanalao Dive St Barthelemy, etc are some of the places which would be crowded with tourists from all over the world. Tourism in West Indies will be at the highest.

Major test-playing nations are competing against each other – Australia, India, South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, Scotland, Kenya and Canada. This time Ireland and Bermuda also have a chance of competing with the other great nations. The best eight teams will then go ahead and play the Super Eights to qualify for the semi finals.

The first match starts on 13 March 2007. It will be played between West Indies and Pakistan. The final will be played on 28 April 2007. India, Australia seems to be strong contenders for taking home the World Cup.

So finish all your office deadlines and be prepared for this entertaining competition against the top Test playing nations.
Cheers
