World Cup - 2003

Three nations – South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe hosted the 8th World Cup. Fourteen teams participated in this World Cup. They were divided into two groups. Group A – Australia, India, Zimbabwe, England, Pakistan, Netherlands, Namibia. Group B - Sri Lanka, Kenya, New Zealand, South Africa, West Indies, Canada, Bangladesh. The best three teams for each of the groups qualified for the Super Sixes. Among these the top four teams qualified for the semifinals.

In Group A, Australia, India and Zimbabwe while in Group B SriLanka, Kenya and New Zealand Entered the semifinals. Kenya seemed to be in very good form in this World Cup. With India, Australia and SriLanka, Kenya also entered the semifinals.

The first semifinal was played between Australia and SriLanka. Australia made 212 against SriLanka. This target was then revised to 171 (according to Duckworth-Lewis method). SriLanka was well short of this target at the end of the match. They were able to score only 123.

In the second semifinals, India easily defeated the Kenyans. India had scored 270 while Kenya was bowled out for 179 runs only.

In the finals, Australia scored heavily against India. They scored 359 with only 2 wickets down. Ricky Ponting was in full flow hammering the Indian bowling attack to all parts of the ground. India were bowled out for 234, giving Australia a huge victory in the World Cup. Ricky Ponting was named the Man of the Match.
