In the opening match, West Indies beat Pakistan by 54 runs. Pakistan won the toss and asked West Indies to bat. West Indies scored 241 for the loss of 9 wickets in 50 overs. Samuels made the highest of the West Indian total. He scored 63 runs in just 70 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes.
Pakistan struggled to chase the West Indian total from the start. Their first wicket fell at a mere score of 6 runs. Shoaib Malik tried to stabilize the Pakistan innings. He made 62 of 54 balls hitting 6 fours and 1 six. Pakistan were bowled out for 187 in 47.2 overs.
The host team registered their first victory and has now almost qualified for the Super Eights. Smith was declared the man of the match for his great bowling figures of 3 for 36.
